OBITUARIES can be informative, like a mini biography.  There may be information on the person's place of birth, indication of marriage and list of children and siblings.  Newspapers in smaller towns tend to publish a more comprehensive obituary.  Larger cities may have neighborhood or ethnic newspapers to search.  Here is a sample of an obituary found in a Chicago Swedish newspaper.  Helena Peterson's place of birth in Sweden is given, along with places of residents in Illinois and her place of burial.

                                    

PROBATE records include wills, letters of administration, inventories, guardianship appointments, and other documents generated when a person dies.  The following is the beginning of the Last Will & Testament of James Pelling.  He mentions his wife by her maiden name and lists all of his living children.     

 

SOCIAL SECURITY APPLICATIONS can supply facts about a person's date and place of birth, parents names, their address and occupation at the time.  Here is a sample of the application of Joseph Haas, listing his place of birth in Germany and his parent's names.

 

FEDERAL CENCUS records are one of the most useful methods of following a person throughout his lifetime.  Federal census records have been taken every ten years since 1790 and offer a variety of information depending on the year searched.  Here is a sample of a family enumerated in 1850.
